    Tuning non-linear charge transport between integer and fractional quantum Hall states

    Controllable point junctions between different quantum Hall phases are a necessary building block for the development of mesoscopic circuits based on fractionally-charged quasiparticles. We demonstrate how particle-hole duality can be exploited to realize such point-contact junctions. We show an implementation for the case filling factors ν=1\nu=1 and ν∗≤1\nu^*\le1 in which both the fractional filling ν∗\nu^* and the coupling strength can be finely and independently tuned. A peculiar crossover from insulating to conducting behavior as ν∗\nu^* goes from 1/3 to 1 is observed. These results highlight the key role played on inter-edge tunneling by local charge depletion at the point contact.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, suppl.ma

    Innovative modular SMA actuator

    A modular design for a shape memory actuator is proposed. The actuator is able to perform linear movements, while the modularity allows force and/or stroke improvements. Experimental results show how the behavior of the proposed implementation is sufficient for a wide class of problems and can be improved with proper developments

    Robotics rehabilitation of the elbow based on surface electromyography signals

    Physical rehabilitation based on robotic systems has the potential to cover the patient’s need of improvement of upper extremity functionalities. In this article, the state of the art of resistant and assistive upper limb exoskeleton robots and their control are thoroughly investigated. Afterward, a single-degree-of-freedom exoskeleton matching the elbow–forearm has been advanced to grant a valid rehabilitation therapy for persons with physical disability of upper limb motion. The authors have focused on the control system based on the use of electromyography signals as an input to drive the joint movement and manage the robotics arm. The correlation analysis between surface electromyography signal and the force exerted by the subject was studied in objects’ grasping tests with the purpose of validating the methodology. The authors developed an innovative surface electromyography force–based active control that adjusts the force exerted by the device during rehabilitation. The control was validated by an experimental campaign on healthy subjects simulating disease on an arm, with positive results that confirm the proposed solution and that open the way to future researches

    The Peach RGF/GLV Signaling Peptide pCTG134 Is Involved in a Regulatory Circuit That Sustains Auxin and Ethylene Actions

    In vascular plants the cell-to-cell interactions coordinating morphogenetic and physiological processes are mediated, among others, by the action of hormones, among which also short mobile peptides were recognized to have roles as signals. Such peptide hormones (PHs) are involved in defense responses, shoot and root growth, meristem homeostasis, organ abscission, nutrient signaling, hormone crosstalk and other developmental processes and act as both short and long distant ligands. In this work, the function of CTG134, a peach gene encoding a ROOT GROWTH FACTOR/GOLVEN-like PH expressed in mesocarp at the onset of ripening, was investigated for its role in mediating an auxin-ethylene crosstalk. In peach fruit, where an auxin-ethylene crosstalk mechanism is necessary to support climacteric ethylene synthesis, CTG134 expression peaked before that of ACS1 and was induced by auxin and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments, whereas it was minimally affected by ethylene. In addition, the promoter of CTG134 fused with the GUS reporter highlighted activity in plant parts in which the auxin-ethylene interplay is known to occur. Arabidopsis and tobacco plants overexpressing CTG134 showed abnormal root hair growth, similar to wild-type plants treated with a synthetic form of the sulfated peptide. Moreover, in tobacco, lateral root emergence and capsule size were also affected. In Arabidopsis overexpressing lines, molecular surveys demonstrated an impaired hormonal crosstalk, resulting in a re-modulated expression of a set of genes involved in both ethylene and auxin synthesis, transport and perception. These data support the role of pCTG134 as a mediator in an auxin-ethylene regulatory circuit and open the possibility to exploit this class of ligands for the rational design of new and environmental friendly agrochemicals able to cope with a rapidly changing environment

    Machine tools thermostabilization using passive control strategies

    The aim of this study is to investigate passive control strategies using Phase Change Materials in Machine Tools (MTs) thermostabilization. By considering the main issues related to the thermal stability, authors presented the application of novel multifunctional materials to Machine Tools structures. A set of advanced materials are considered: aluminium foams, corrugate-core sandwich panels and polymeric concrete beds. The adopted solutions have been infiltrated by phase change materials (PCMs) in order to maintain the thermal stability of MTs when the environmental temperature is perturbed.     PKM mechatronic clamping adaptive device

    This study proposes a novel adaptive fixturing device based on active clamping systems for smart micropositioning of thin-walled precision parts. The modular architecture and the structure flexibility make the system suitable for various industrial applications. The proposed device is realized as a Parallel Kinematic Machine (PKM), opportunely sensorized and controlled, able to perform automatic error-free workpiece clamping procedures, drastically reducing the overall fixturing set-up time. The paper describes the kinematics and dynamics of this mechatronic system. A first campaign of experimental trails has been carried out on the prototype, obtaining promising results

    The Spectral and Temporal Properties of Transient Sources in Early-type Galaxies

    Copyright 2012 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.We report the spectral and temporal variability properties of 18 candidate transient (TC) and potential transient (PTC) sources detected in deep multi-epoch Chandra observation of the nearby elliptical galaxies, NGC3379, NGC4278, and NGC4697. Only one source can be identified with a background counterpart, leaving 17 TCs + PTCs in the galaxies. Of these, 14 are in the galaxy field, supporting the theoretical picture that the majority of field X-ray binaries (XRBs) will exhibit transient accretion for >75% of their lifetime. Three sources are coincident with globular clusters, including two high-luminosity candidate black hole (BH) XRBs, with Lx= 5.4 × 10 erg/s and Lx= 2.8 × 10 erg/s, respectively. The spectra, luminosities, and temporal behavior of these 17 sources suggest that the transient population is heterogeneous, including neutron star (NS) and BH XRBs in both normal and high-rate accretion modes, and super soft sources containing white dwarf binaries. Our TC and PTC detections are noticeably fewer than the number expected from the population synthesis (PS) models of Fragos et al., tailored to our new Chandra pointings of NGC4278. We attribute this discrepancy to the PS assumption that the transient population is composed of NS XRBs, as well as differences between the statistical analysis and error estimates used in the model and our observationsPeer reviewe

    Good and bad tetrads in f(T) gravity

    We investigate the importance of choosing good tetrads for the study of the field equations of f(T)f(T) gravity. It is well known that this theory is not invariant under local Lorentz transformations, and therefore the choice of tetrad plays a crucial role in such models. Different tetrads will lead to different field equations which in turn have different solutions. We suggest to speak of a good tetrad if it imposes no restrictions on the form of f(T)f(T). Employing local rotations, we construct good tetrads in the context of homogeneity and isotropy, and spherical symmetry, where we show how to find Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions in vacuum. Our principal approach should be applicable to other symmetries as well.Comment: 25 page

    Molecular study on Senecio fontanicola (S. doria group, Asteraceae) and its conservation status

    Senecio fontanicola is endemic to black-bog-rush fens of southern Austria, north-western Slovenia and north-eastern Italy. It is characterized by oblanceolate leaves, a low number of supplementary bracts and glabrous achenes and it grows in marshy spring areas, fens and reed beds, between elevations from 20 to 850 m . The species was never described with molecular traits and during the last decades, S. fontanicola showed a dramatic decline due to land reclamation for agriculture. Therefore, the present study aims to characterize S. fontanicola using the molecular barcoding technique and to updated its distribution to propose a global risk category for the species, based on IUCN criteria. The three molecular markers  used in this study (trnH-psbA, rbcL, and ITS) clearly distinguished S. fontanicola from S. doria. s.s.and the revised distribution allowed the definition of the conservation status of the species, that is Endangered-EN B2ab(i,ii,iii,iv) following the B criterion of the IUCN guidelines
